La Guajira
La Guajira is one of the most visually stunning places in all of Colombia. At the most northern tip of the country, it has a unique landscape where the brown sunny desert meets the spectacular blue sea. Palomino is a laid back seaside town at the very bottom of La Guajira. The town has developed a lot in the past few years with a wide range of restaurants, bars and accommodations. Going tubing down the lazy river of Don Diego is a fun activity near Palomino where you can take in the beautiful mountains and wildlife.
As you travel north from Palomino, the change from green lush vegetation to the hot, dry desert is remarkable. ExpoTur conducts an excellent tour of the northern region that includes overnight stays in Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas. Sleeping in the traditional hammocks named chinchorros and off roading through the desert makes this an unforgettable adventure. The area is inhabited by the indigenous community Wayuu which make colorful artisan crafts like their famous mochilas. They also make these distinctive straw hats and comfortable mantas - I’m wearing both in this blog post. Although a trip to La Guajira may not be for everyone, if you are looking for adventure, fantastic seafood and an extraordinary experience, this is a place you have to visit!
